When I used the word “network”, many of you might be thinking that I will provide you a list of Investment Banks, Private Equity funds and Finance companies. While the list is important, it’s also important to look at how to approach people and network in Finance.

Networking is building and maintaining relationships.

Whatever you want to learn, be it Finance or networking, there are strategies and tactics.

Strategies are high level views like how to conduct informational interviews, how to approach people in groups and making a career plan.

Tactics are how you say, what you say, emailing etc.

You need both the approaches in networking.

What key strategies you need to apply? How to develop the mindset for networking?

Follow some do’s and don’ts in networking:

Do’s

1.If the school/college you are graduating from is not well-known, put extra efforts in networking.

2. Start networking months and months before you actually look for a job. You can do this simultaneously with your graduation.

3. Networking is about getting more people to know you, so meet as many people as you can in Finance.

4. When you meet people, be genuinely interested in them. Discuss about their background, interest, hobbies, and any recent personal event. Practice this and you will build relationships.

5. Understand that networking is a long term effort.

6. Change the strategy of networking if you are not getting results after investing months. Ask friends and people in Finance what is going wrong.

7. While networking, don’t overlook names/friends in your circle.

8. Keep in mind that only early bird catches the worm. Have an early start and establish contacts.

9. Check whether you are making progress.

10. Remember, at high level, networking is equal to building and maintaining relationships.

Don’ts

1. Brag about qualifications, credentials or grades if you don’t have experience or proven expertise.

2. Talk about subjects like Market, Finance, Industry or Company when you meet people in Finance. They are doing it at least 50 hours a week, so, instead, talk about their interests and hobbies.

3. Repeat the same strategy, if you are not getting results. Take a step back and check what’s going wrong.

4. Focus on results only, as you may lose relationship building, learning and making friends in Finance.

If you want to make a career in Finance, you need to be a good networker too. Finding a job would not be difficult, if you have right skills, right attitude and excellent networking skills.

Now, go ahead and start building relationships.

Freerice is a website where users play various educational, multiple-choice games in order to fight world hunger. For every question the user answers correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated. The categories include English vocabulary (the game the site began with), multiplication tables, pre-algebra, chemical symbols (basic or intermediate), English grammar, basic foreign language vocabulary for English speakers (French, German, Italian, and Spanish), geography (flags of the world, world capitals and country identification), the identification of famous artwork, and literature (popular books). As you answer questions, your total score is displayed as a mound of rice and the amount.

History

The website went live on October 7, 2007 with 830 grains of rice donated on its first day. The second word in its name was originally capitalized as “FreeRice.”

On 20 November 2007, the WFP launched a campaign to “feed a child for Thanksgiving,” encouraging internet users “to take time out from traditionally the busiest online shopping period of the year and help the hungry by playing phenomenally successful web-based vocab game, FreeRice.”

For a brief while, the amount of rice donated per correct answer was increased to 20 grains, though this was reduced to 10 grains of rice per answer within a few months.

In March 2009 the FreeRice website was donated to the UN World Food Programme.

According to scientists, the first impression is formed for not more than 7 seconds. Another study shows that 93 percent of the first impression is formed by our appearance, gestures, face expressions, etc. and only 7 percent – by what we say. Here are some seemingly little things that can make a big difference in how other people see you.

Proper posture is important

Body language tells a lot about your mood, personality and confidence. For example, slouching gives the impression of insecurity. You must always stand upright, if you want to convey the message that you are a strong, confident, deserving individual.

Handshake

The handshake is indicative of your personality. A loose handshake can be considered to be a sign of weakness or levity, while a firm handshake is typically associated with strength of character. So to create a good impression there are three rules you need to remember: right hand, a complete grip and a firm squeeze (but not too strong). Last but not least- make sure your palm is dry. This is pretty much valid for both sexes.

Be on time

If you are late for a meeting, you will certainly create a bad impression. In some cultures being late is regarded as a personal offense; it shows lack of respect. So you should arrive 10 minutes earlier in case something unexpected happens.

Listen to others

Let the other person finish speaking even if you want to interrupt them. In this way you will show your respect for this person, even though you may disagree on certain issues. You wouldn’t like it yourself if somebody is constantly interrupting you.

Be careful with the jokes

Breaking the ice with a joke is a perfect way to make a good impression, but don’t go overboard with it. If you don’t know a person well enough be careful not to step off the wrong foot. A seemingly innocent joke for you may hit a sensitive topic for somebody else.

Smile

There’s nothing more effective than a smile to create a good first impression. A friendly and confident smile will put everybody at ease. So smiling can do wonders when it comes to great first impressions. But don’t go overboard with this – people who take this too far can seem insincere and moody.

By helping each other learn this skill, you will really strengthen your bond. However, while there are changes your partner will be willing to make, there will also be things they will not want to change. The same goes for you, so, you will both need to take little steps forward and find a balance where both of you are happy. Sometimes it happens that one person ends up making most of the adjustments over a period of time. That is one of the major causes of a failed relationship.

3. The Challenge of Different Lifestyles

Lifestyle differences pose the biggest challenge, especially those which clash directly, such as when one person likes to sleep early and the other likes to stay up late, or if there  is one spare room in the house, which one wants to convert into a yoga and meditation room and the other into a study. Here, you need to be aware that just as you would want to preserve certain elements of your lifestyle, so would your partner. You don’t want to begin compromising the things you love. Instead, show some initiative to include the other person’s preferences into your life. It is a fine balance, and you both will need to do this.

So, if you sleep at different times, try to get some quality time with each other in the evening. If you have different aspirations for your spare room, perhaps it can be converted into a study with light furniture, which can be moved aside when your partner wants to do his yoga and meditation. At the end of the day, you both need to be mature and willing to grow to make your relationship work.
